What We Believe

These nine statements are brief glimpses into what we believe. We know that in a world of ever-evolving truth, it is vitally important the Church know what she believes and why.   If you should have any additional questions, please ask us!

One of the Core Values here at Pathway Church is ‘We Are Family.’ The fact is, families do not have to agree on everything to be a family. But, we have to agree on the main things - Jesus died, was buried, and rose again. Salvation is available only through repentance and belief in Jesus. The Bible is absolutely true. And, Jesus is returning for His Church. So long as we have unity on these things, we can come together as family and worship Him.

We feel it is important for you to know what we believe and why. For more information about the official statements of our denomination, you can visit ChurchofGod.org/beliefs.

1.  THE TRINITY

We believe there is one God, eternally existing as three persons, namely The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. Meaning, there has never been a moment when God existed in isolation. The very essence of God is to be relational, and to share His love. The Trinity is at the core of all Christian doctrine. Each person of the “God-head” is equal, but distinct - same in nature, but unique in personhood.

2.  CHRISTOLOGY

We believe Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of the Father, conceived of the Holy Ghost, and born of the Virgin Mary. Jesus was crucified, buried, and raised from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is today at the right hand of the Father as our intercessor. His work of atonement was fully effective in reconciling man to God. When we walked away from Him through our iniquity, He ran to us through His incarnation. His name is the name above all names. He stripped satan of all his power. He has given an inheritance to all who believe on Him, giving us the right to be called sons and
daughters of God.

3.  SIN AND SALVATION

We believe all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Repentance is necessary for the forgiveness of sins. We are justified, regenerated (made new), and born again only by faith in the blood of Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts revealing the Father’s love to us.

4.  SANCTIFICATION & HOLINESS

We believe every person who accepts Jesus as their savior should experience a continuing work of sanctification in their life - a cleansing of our motives, mindsets, and methods. This work does not happen by way of will power, but by faith in the blood of Jesus, by the work of the Holy Spirit to renew our minds and convict us of wrong thoughts and actions, and by having our souls washed with the truth of Scripture. We believe Holiness is God’s standard for all believers. Holiness is the consequence of inward wholeness. It means “nothing missing, and nothing broken.” Wholeness is found as we yield to the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts.

5.  BAPTISM & COMMUNION

We believe in water baptism by immersion, and all who repent should be baptized in the name of the Father, and of His Son, Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Spirit. Baptism is not a work that brings salvation or cleansing. Rather, it is an outward work displaying the inward cleansing we have experienced through salvation. We believe in receiving The Lord’s Supper - also called Eucharist, or communion. We affirm it is a sacrament instituted by Christ and signifies our being made one with Him as we
partake of His blood and body - the juice and the bread. We remember His atoning work, shed blood,
and broken body.

6.  BAPTISM IN THE SPIRIT

We believe in the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit,  just as Scripture teaches. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a work of grace available to every believer. As we yield to the Spirit of God, He fills our lives with His power, His gifts, and His fruit. We believe in the work of our the Holy Spirit in our lives, and the availability of every gift of the Spirit, including speaking in tongues (... prophecy, miracles, faith, etc. 1 Cor. 12:9).

You do not have to speak in tongues to be saved. We do not believe a person is more spiritual than another because they speak in tongues. However, as the Scripture teaches, we believe this heavenly prayer language is an invaluable resource in the life of the believer. Acts two says they received power as they were filled with the Spirit. We believe our lives should be submitted to every work of the Holy Spirit - His gifts, His fruit, and His guidance.

7.  HEALING & WHOLENESS

We believe that healing and wholeness are provided for all in the atonement of Jesus Christ. “The atonement” meaning His death, burial, resurrection, ascension, and enthronement. Every sickness bows to Jesus - whether they be sicknesses of the body or of the mind. The atoning work of Jesus Christ offers physical, emotional, and relational healing. The fulness of that healing work is what we have come to refer to as wholeness. We define
wholeness as “nothing missing, nothing broken.”

8.  ETERNAL LIFE

We believe all who have placed their trust in Jesus for salvation will inherit eternal life - either by way of death or by way of the second coming of The Lord. For the believer, both paths will end with a glorified body. We believe Christ will physically return to this earth. At that time, there will be a bodily resurrection, (described in 1 Thes. 4:14-18). The righteous dead will be raised to life eternal and will live with the Lord forever in the new heaven and new earth He has prepared. The unrighteous will stand before the Lord on the day of judgement and be cast out into a place the scripture says describes as being filled with weeping and torment.

9.  SCRIPTURE

We believe in the verbal inspiration of Scripture. The Bible is the infallible truth of God’s Kingdom, and the telling of His story. The way He has revealed Himself to us, from Genesis to Revelation, is the foundation of all we believe and teach. We place a high value on Scripture, its authority, its infallibility, and its authorship. We believe the words contained within it were breathed by the Spirit of God to people throughout history, revealing to us the way God has worked through His people, what He asks of them, and how we can have a personal relationship with Him.
